You could make a huge difference in the lives of others as a volunteer for Saint John Hospital. Learn more.

Whether your assignment is to provide supplemental services in patient care areas, assist visitors or help staff with clerical work, you can make an important contribution to the hospital and the community.

Just ask one of our 35 volunteers and growing who range in age from age 14 to 90. Commitments are flexible, and there are assignments to suit most schedules. We provide the training for all volunteer positions.

In addition to submitting an adult application (it may take 24 hours before application is received), the following requirements must be completed before becoming a volunteer:

  • A personal interview must be conducted. (Note: completing the following process does not guarantee a placement for volunteering)
  • A background investigation
  • TB screening and during Flu Season, a Flu Vaccination
  • Attend a hospital orientation, generally held the third Tuesday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please provide the following information when applying for a Youth (application) volunteer opportunity:

Submit a letter of referral as part of the application and acceptance process for volunteer services at Providence Medical Center/Saint John Hospital. Your letter must:

  • be submitted by a teacher, councilor or professor of your choice
  • be on school letterhead
  • include the student's full name
  • include the number of years they have known the student, as well as in what capacity
  • explain why they would recommend this student for the volunteer opportunity
  • date, signature and position/title of the person writing the reference should be included

E.R./Outpatient Ambassador and Surgery Waiting Room

Relate information to surgery patients' families from recovery and identify family members for staff. Also check in on patients and family members waiting to be seen to determine if they need anything; act as an ambassador and liaison between the nursing staff and the family members. Qualifications: Must be able to communicate with persons of different backgrounds and ages, perform clerical duties such as filing and record-keeping and understand computer information relating to patients in recovery.

Gift Shop Clerk

Sell merchandise to Gift Shop customers and assist in stocking shelves. You might also arrange showcases and internal displays and help take inventory. Qualifications: Good public relations skills, simple math record-keeping ability are required. Sales experience is beneficial.

Hospitality Cart/Volunteer Patient Visitor

Offer items and nutritional snacks free of charge to the patients on the different nursing floors. Volunteer Patient Visiting is also a key component in this job duty as you go from room to room. Qualifications: Must be able to communicate with persons of different backgrounds and ages; be a people person and outgoing.

Information Desk/PBXC Operator Volunteer

Act as a goodwill ambassador for all visitors and patients at Saint John. Handle patient information inquiries in person and on the telephone. Transfer phone calls as needed. Qualifications: The ability to hear and talk on the telephone. The willingness to escort patients by foot or wheelchair; along with having good public relations skills. Self-starters with outgoing personalities do best in this type of placement.

Knitters/Sewer

Lap Blankets are needed. Also Walker Bags are needed for the patients who use Walkers.Qualifications: Sewing, Knitting or Croqueting.

Plant Operations Volunteer

Assist staff with all indoor and outdoor requests that come through from any hospital department throughout the day. Examples would be fixing light fixtures to moving offices to all handy work. Qualifications: Experience with grounds keeping and/or plant operations in previous work.

Providence Medical Group – Primary Care Lansing

Answer phones, stock supplies, keep forms stocked and replenished, assist patients and other office/clerical work as needed and requested. Qualifications: Have excellent communication and phone skills, sense of humor, able to empathize with patients, knowledge of simple office procedures and be able to sit for prolonged periods.

Senior Behavioral Health Unit

The purpose of this position is to assist the nursing associates in meeting the needs of patients. This could include mealtimes, walks with the patients, downtimes with the patients and/or rounding to check in on them and make sure they don't need anything.
